Text of My Speech


An anonymous soul once voiced, “The rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher.” This quotation, simple yet inspirational, vocalizes the thought that although you achieve a great accomplishment in your life, there is always a greater task waiting to be vanquished.

My name is Jillian L, and from the first day of my freshman year, I have already promised to devote my time into three major subjects which will benefit my life and myself as a person throughout the four years I will attend this high school.

From day one at this school, I have been warned about the overbearing workload that lies ahead, and sure enough, I’ve been blindsided by literary terms and essays, strange Geometry creatures, and Spanish quizzes. However, an eminent goal I would like to achieve in my freshman year remains as becoming a better scholar. Accomplishing a goal such as this requires strenuous work and persistent attitude, which I seek to acquire so I’m able to get out of F.I.R.E. and receive the best grades possible. Along with this, I would like to join more clubs so I can become more active within my school.

Over the summer, I practiced and tried out for my boundary school's soccer team. The practices during the summer were by far the worst I’ve ever had to endure in an hour and a half’s time, considering the constant sprints, running and stadiums were enough to mentally and physically exhaust even the best athletes on the team, however, putting up with the difficult workouts, and working out on my own not only landed me a spot on the team, but made me a superior player on my club team as well. Although I improved greatly as a soccer player this summer, I have created a new goal to become even better by working as hard as I can each opportunity I get.

My final goal for my freshman year pertains to be making new friendships and rebuilding old ones. Over the two weeks I’ve attended this school, I’ve made many new friends, and some I know I will keep close to me for many years to come. As for the old relationships I’ve shared with many people in middle school, I can only hope we are able to put aside pointless fights and arguments in order to replace dirty looks with hugs and cheerful smiles across the halls.

Truly, freshman year will, without a doubt, be full of surprises and excitement, but within everything that happens, I hope to achieve every goal no matter the challenges I will have to endure to execute them.
